Introduction :

There is an increasing need for highly computer literate business professionals who can develop business applications using spreadsheets, databases etc. and can work confidently with their IT colleagues. Holders of both the Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Business Information Systems will have had a firm grounding in the essential core IT and business skills and will be able to build bridges between technology and business practice.

Course name : ABE - Business Information System (Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma)

Entry requirements :

Certificate

No formal qualifications are required but applicants should demonstrate competence in English by the attainment of one of the following:

• British Council - Intermediate Certificate in English/Upper Advanced Certificate in English

• LCCI - English for Business (EFB) 1st or 2nd level

• Pitman/City and Guilds - English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)/English for Business and Communication

Diploma

Applicants must have obtained one of the following :

• ABE Certificate

• Two "A" Level passes plus four GCSE passes at Grade A, B or C, two of which must be English and Maths

• Overseas qualifications which may be accepted by the Registrar as being equivalent to the above

• ABE also welcomes applications from candidates without formal qualifications who have been in appropriate employment for at least two years. A reference letter from the employer(s) must accompany such applications

Advanced Diploma

Applicants must have obtained one of the following :

• ABE Diploma

• A UK Honours Degree or Overseas equivalent

• Other recognised qualifications of approved Overseas Institutes of Higher Education

Registration : All candidates must be members of the ABE. Once the students have enrolled at Scott's College London, they will be guided for registration.

The course subjects of ABE BIS are as follows:
                                                                                                           
1st Year:    Certificate Level

The four compulsory subjects are:

  1. Introduction to the World of Computers
  2. IT Applications and Skills
  3. Introduction to Business
  4. Introduction to Accounting

2nd Year:    Diploma Level

Diploma part 1:
Three Compulsory subjects:

  1. Computer Applications in Business & Finance
  2. Computer Fundamentals
  3. Business Communication & Presentation

Plus one of the following:

  • Oragnisational Behaviour ( Management Pathway)
  • Financial Accounting (Financial Pathway)
Diploma part 2:
Four Compulsory subjects:
  1. Networks and Distributed Systems
  2. Principals of Programming
  3. Quantitative Methods for Business Management
  4. System Analysis
Plus one of the following
  • Human Resource Management (Management Pathway)
  • Managerial Accounting (Finance Pathway)

 

3rd Year:   Advanced Diploma Level

The four compulsory papers are:
  1. Contemporary Application Development Methods
  2. Internet Systems Development
  3. Managing Systems Change
  4. Relational Database Applications in Business

Plus one of the following:

  • Strategic Human Resource Management for Business Organization (Management Pathway)
  • Corporate Finance (Finance Pathway)

Diploma 1

  1. Computer Fundamentals
  2. Computer Applications in Business and Finance
  3. Principles of Programming

A choice of either Organisational Behaviour or Financial Accounting
Diploma 2

  1. Computer Networking
  2. Systems Analysis and Design
  3. Information Systems Project Management

Plus two of the following:

  1. Human Resource Management
  2. Marketing Policy
  3. Planning and Communication
  4. Managerial Accounting
  5. Quantitative Methods for Business and Management

 

Advanced Diploma

  1. Contemporary Application Development Methods
  2. Internet Systems Development
  3. Relational Database Applications in Business
  4. Information Systems Strategic Management

 

Plus one of the following:

  1. Strategic HRM for Business Organisation
  2. Managing in Organisations
  3. Strategic Marketing Management
  4. Corporate Finance

 

Duration : 3 years.

Pass marks :

Successful candidates will be awarded a graded pass in each subject. Credits or Distinctions will be awarded where applicable. All result slips show alphabetical grades; it is not the policy of The Association to disclose marks obtained. Candidates will be allowed to resit any subject which they have failed but not subjects that they have passed.

Examinations :

The three-hour written examinations are held twice a year (usually first week in June and December). There is no limit to the number of subjects candidates may enter for but it is recommended that you sit no more than five subjects at one session.

The candidates need to register separately for the examination. The registration fee is charged per paper. The closing date of registration is two months prior to the actual examination date. The closing date is always displayed on the website and on the examination entry form.

Intake : January – February, June – July, August – September every year.

Career progression :

After completing ABE course students can obtain their bachelor's degree at a number of UK and overseas universities.
